  • Graham's law is a ratio of square roots (rate A/rate B = √M_B/√M_A); simplifying √32/√2 to √16=4 or squaring (1.66)² to isolate an unknown molar mass requires fluency with radical and rational-exponent manipulation, not just formula substitution.

  • Both the 'Effusion Time' and 'Determining Molar Mass' examples require solving an equation with the unknown trapped under a square root — squaring both sides of 1.66/1 = √44.0/√M to solve for M is exactly the radical-equation technique, and skipping the squaring step (or squaring only one side) is the standard place this goes wrong.
