  • Average rate = −Δ[A]/Δt is the average-rate-of-change formula (f(x₂)−f(x₁))/(x₂−x₁) with concentration as output and time as input, and the instantaneous rate read from a tangent line to the concentration-vs-time curve is the same idea at a single point — reaction rates are the first place that already-learned slope machinery pays off on real data.
