Balancing a half-reaction's charge by adding the right integer number of electrons to each side — for example Fe → Fe³⁺ + 3e⁻ — is isolating an unknown coefficient so both sides of an equation are equal, the same move already licensed as a prerequisite for balancing nuclear equations, reused here for redox half-reactions in acidic or basic solution.
